M.Tech. CSE Interview Experience at IIIT Guwahati

Indian Institute of Information Technology Guwahati is one of the 25 IIITs located across India. This institute was set up by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under the Public-Private Partnership mode (PPP).

M.Tech. in CSE

Department of CSE, IIIT-G offers MTech CSE program in 2 modes -

  • On-Campus Mode : This is the Regular M.Tech. CSE program where students need to visit the campus and classes are conducted in physical classrooms. For more details, visit this link.
  • Online Mode : Classes will be held mainly in Online mode through Learning Management System portal. The programme is designed for the students with different academic backgrounds with elective options to supplement core CS courses. For more details, visit this link.

This year, I applied for the MTech Program in Computer Science and Engineering for AY 2021-22. There was No Application fee. All the candidates had to appear for an Online Interview.

The Interview

At first, I was intimated about the Interview through email few days before the scheduled Interview Date. The date was mentioned as July 12, 2021 from the very first day under the Important Dates Section. The interview was conducted via Google Meet and probably, candidates were interviewed in multiple seperate panels simultaneously. Mine was scheduled in Panel-1 consisting of 5 Professors.

P1 - Hi Ayanabha !
Me - Good morning sir.
P1 - Okay so let's start the interview. Can you please tell us what your final project was all about?
Me - (Explaind, I had done a project on authentication scheme and data security)
P1 - Hmm, that means your project was on some network or data security. Can you name some of the Networking protocols?
Me - (Told)
P1 - Which language have you used to implement the project?
Me - Mostly Java, and for Encryption algorithm, I have used Python 3.
P1 - What are differences between Java and C? What are the features present in Java but are missing in C?
Me - (Explained the OOP features like Encapsulation, Polymorphism etc.)
P1 - If you define a seperate function in C and use that repeatedly, isn't it an encapsulation?
Me - (A bit confused) No it's not encapsulation ...
P1 - Okay good! What other topics have you prepared?
Me - Data structures, Algorithms, Linear algebra, Probability ...
P1 - What do you mean by linear independence ?
Me - (Told)
P1 - Can you conclude something from it ?
Me - (Confused) If a set of vectors are linearly independent then the matrix will have determinant not equals to zero.
P1 - Okay do you know about Rank-Nullity theorem?
Me - (Told)
P1 - What is a Rank of a matrix?
Me - Rank of a matrix 'r' is a number such that every minor of order (r+1) will have determinant = 0  and atleast one minor of order 'r' will have non-zero determinant.
P1 - What is a minor ?
Me - For a certain element in a matrix, he determinant of the matrix obtained by eliminating the row and column in which the element belongs to. ...
P1 - Are you talking about Echelon form? (Trying to confuse, may be)
Me - No, (I explained with an example)
P1 - Hmmm, okay I am done from my side.

This was all about the Technical round. A managerial sort of round was waiting for me after that, the same I faced in the Direct PhD interview of NIT Arunachal Pradesh.

P2 - So, what is your GATE score?
Me - (Told)
P2 - What is your year of Graduation? Are you planning to sit for GATE next year?
Me - No sir, I have graduated in 2020 and already I have dropped 1 year, so I will not sit for GATE next year.
P2 - You have a good GATE score, you can join PhD in any of the IITs, I think so. Will you leave then if you get into an IIT for PhD?
Me - Sir currently I don't have any planning for PhD and I am interested in joining industry after my MTech.
P2 - Okay thank you Ayanabha. You may leave now.

Final Results and Conclusion

Around 7 days later, the results were published and all the candidates were sent a common mail containing an attached list of all the selected candidates. And guess what, my name was in the list. So this was my story. I did not join the program as I have already been selected in IIT Jodhpur M.Tech. AI program.
